Top beauty products to soothe a winter-worn face this spring

By: Erin Torrance

Wiarton Willie, Canada’s reining groundhog authority, has made his prediction—spring is coming early! So in celebration, we have compiled a list of beauty tips and products to get you prepped for spring.

Winter winds and dry air wreak havoc on our skin, making it appear parched and lacklustre. To revitalize your skin, the first step is to exfoliate, sweeping away all the dead skin.

Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Plump Perfect Gentle Line Smoothing Exfoliator

Consider your skin type when choosing an exfoliator. For most complexions, a product with a slightly abrasive texture will slough off the old. Try Elizabeth Arden’s Ceramide Plump Perfect Gentle Line Smoothing Exfoliator ($32.00, The Bay). This product is a multi-tasker, exfoliating while erasing the appearance of fine lines and imperfections, and refining pores.

For sensitive or acne-prone skin, use a retinol-based facial routine like Dr Brandt’s Glow Ruby Laser Technology Kit ($65, Sephora). While it sounds complex, the kit contains two simple products, a serum and a cream, that mimic the rejuvenating power of Dr Brandt’s in-office ruby laser treatments. Retinol-based products like these exfoliate from the inside out, loosening dead skin cells while nurturing a smooth, glowing complexion.

However, retinol increases skin’s sensitivity to the harsh effects of the sun, so follow-up your routine with a moisturizing sunscreen like Dr. Jart+’s Water Fuse Beauty Balm, which doubles as a primer (SPF 25-45, $32-$39, Sephora). Moisturizing facial masks are also great for nurturing weather-worn skin. Oatmeal based masks, especially, help to soothe dry or sensitive skin. Lush’s Oatifix fresh face mask ($34.95, in-stores only), containing oatmeal and banana, is effective and sweet-smelling, making it atreat for your skin and senses.

For oily, acne-prone or combination skin, About’s beauty expert Julyne Derrick recommends a homemade banana blend mask. To make this, blend together one ripe banana, 1 tbsp. honey and a few drops of either fresh orange or lemon juice. Apply the mixture to your entire face and neck for 15 minutes. Rinse with a warm washcloth. The banana will help your skin retain moisture, while honey’s antibacterial properties reduce acne and the appearance of scars and dark spots.

Don’t forget your lips! With naturally-derived ingredients and a sweet vanilla scent, Caudalie’s Lip Conditioner ($12, Caudalie Paris) hydrates a chapped and lipstick-worn pout.

With these products in mind, take some spa time and give your face some much-needed TLC this spring.
